Gaza Community Mental Health Programme finalized a training course entitled "Mental Health for Children"
The Training and Scientific Research Department at Gaza Community Mental Health Programme finalized a training course entitled "Mental Health for Children". The training was conducted in cooperation with War Child Holland under the project "Helping Children in Gaza Heal".
The finalization of the training course was in the presence of Dr. Ziad Awad, Head of Academic and Professional Unit at the Training and Scientific Research Department, Ms. Tahany Hussein, Project Coordinator at GCMHP and Ms. Reham Ouda, Project Officer at War Child Holland. The participants were 13 children animators from partner institutions with War Child Holland including "Al-Mawasi Neighborhood – Rafah" and Benevolent Palestinian Child's Friends Association.
The five- day training course consisted of 30 training hours and was conducted by GCMHP's Professionals. It discussed different important topics including: introduction to the most common children mental disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, social phobia, anxiety disorder, and psychosocial assessment of children (10-16) years old. In addition to early detection and case referral to specialized community centers, principles of psychological first aid for children, the secondary trauma of caregivers, and the application of self-care skills.
During the finalization of the training course, Dr. Awad stressed on the importance of such training courses. He also emphasized the importance of the mental health, research and training services provided by GCMHP, which are mainly aimed at achieving psychosocial safety.
In her turn, Ms. Ouda praised the efforts of GCMHP as a key partner of War Child Holland and as a specialized institution that provides community mental health services. She advised the participants to apply what they have learnt from the training in their work.
